Travel in Namibia: which activities should you prioritise?
Namibia is a largely desert country, and in fact owes its name directly to the Namib Desert. But it is precisely this feature that most attracts travellers from Western Europe, as we are not used to such landscapes. And where there's a different environment there's also a different fauna, which is why this country is so attractive to animal lovers. Without further ado, let's take a look at the activities you should be doing in Namibia to ensure you have the time of your life.
A trek in the Namib desert
Do you like the idea of walking through the ochre dunes in the desert? Would you like to spend a night under the stars with your partner, admiring the celestial sky? Then there's a good chance that a trek in the Namib will appeal to you! Don't worry: on a trip to NamibiaYou will normally be accompanied by guides and provided with comfortable tents at night. So there's nothing to risk, apart from succumbing to the beauty of the sunsets and sunrises over the red hills.
A safari in Etosha National Park
Etosha National Park is very well known in Africa, and features on the programme of most organised trips to Namibia. Quite simply, it is one of the largest game reserves in the world. Most of the animals known from the African savannah can be found here: elephants, giraffes, oryx, greater kudu, lions, zebras, rhinoceroses... In all, there are no fewer than 114 species of mammal, so you can be sure of coming back with plenty of superb photos to share.
Note that it is above all during the dry season (May to September) that the animals can be seen in tourist areas. During the wet season, they tend to move to other areas with more greenery.
A discovery of the Walvis Bay esplanade
Walvis Bay is French for "whale bay". Although you are unlikely to encounter a whale here, it is possible to see seals and dolphins. But it's the pink flamingos in particular that are the attraction of this wetland area, which you can cruise through on board a catamaran. And there's more, the city The town of Walvis Bay is also well worth a visit, with buildings dating back to colonisation. There's even a museum retracing its gradual development, which is still very interesting!
